One of the stanzas in one of the recent Hillsong United songs, So Will I (100 Billion X) says the following:
And as You speak
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath
Evolving in pursuit of what You said
If it all reveals Your nature so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You say
Every painted sky
A canvas of Your grace
If creation still obeys You so will I
So will I
Nice words. However, you can’t use the word “evolving” in this context and not have to answer for it. Why? Because of the number of evangelical Christians who are beginning to believe in theistic evolution.
This choice of words begs the following questions,
- Did it’s writer consider the implications of this word?
- Does he or she embrace theistic evolution?
- Is this a benign usage of the word “evolving?”
It matters.

The use of the word was purposeful and despite the controversy it has raised, they haven’t changed it to a word that would be be an issue for Christians who take God at His Word. It’s a slippery slope when we allow ourselves to let these compromises find their way into our worship of the Creator who made us in His image. Evolution requires death before sin, which is contrary to the whole of God’s Word. Thank you for posting this article.

Hi Sandy, thank you for your comments. If it were t for the foolishness of theistic evolution we might be able to let it pass. Frequently I discover people who don’t see the value in thinking through how their creativity etc. might be misinterpreted. Thanks again.

This song completely bums me out. If you told me as a child I would live to see the whole of the church openly singing this blasphemous song I would have never believed it. I walk out every time my church sings it. Shame on the pastors who embrace it and/or let it slide.

I’m sorry I didn’t see this post until now Shellie. I don’t know if I feel as passionately as you do against it and those who endorse it. I do think that it was poorly thought out. Are there aspects of the song other than the reference to evolution that concern you?

I thought what the heck!! If the creatures evolve so will I?? It bothered me for quite some time. As I did a little research the Assemblies of God whom Hillsong is connected from have a kinda open view of science. like in their Doctrine of Creation its stated, “In studying the biblical doctrine of creation, it should be understood that the Bible makes no claim to be a scientific textbook. Nor should the Bible, which is intended to communicate to people throughout the ages, be expected to utilize modern scientific terminology” and in their new formed denomination the Australian Christian Churches believe, “We believe that the heavens and earth and all original life forms, including humanity, were made by the specific immediate creative acts of God as described in the account of origins presented in Genesis, and that all biological changes which have occurred since creation are limited to variation within each species. There is much more (please research) but from what I’ve read and gathered they at least believe that animals can evolve and some don’t believe in a six literal days of creation. Which explains their theology in the song. As Casting Crowns sang, its a slow fade.

I understand that. I just wasn’t able to tell if you were taking a side or asking a question. Of course we know there can be changes within a species but that’s not Darwinian evolution etc. I dont think the composer intended to make a statement about evolution. Nevertheless, some will feel he did.
