You can now be fined up to $250,000 if you call someone an ‘illegal alien’ in New York City
Now, in theory, this fine is only imposed if someone uses the term to humiliate someone:
Enter the subjectivity involved in deciding what might humiliate a person. (Hey, I don’t like it when someone says I have made “dad joke.” Can I get money for that?)
According to Melissa Padilla, even using the term accurately it is humiliating. Her parents worked hard, made sacrifices, therefore they shouldn’t be called illegal aliens. She also wants the Library of Congress to remove the term from its subject headings.
For me, this isn’t about illegal aliens or immigration. It’s about the logic guiding America these days.
“…a people without understanding shall come to ruin.”
SIDEBAR: You can insult our President, you can insult Christians who don’t believe in evolution, you can insult coaches and their teams, bad singers and performers, and all manner of citizens of the United States. But if you refer to the illegality of someone’s presence in the United States by calling them an illegal alien, you must pay $250,000.
