A Letter to My Youngest Son Upon His High School Graduation

Dear Grayson,

It is impossible to describe what life with you has been like since you were born. From the time you were small—knowing you were my last child—I anticipated these days that are now fast approaching. I wrote these words about you when you were just a kid:

When I look at my little boy and all of his childish love of fun, and then I remember that he won’t always be a child, but a man with interests elsewhere, it’s then I am thankful for these days we have had and still have. It’s then that my heart breaks for those future days when I will miss his companionship; it’s then I am most acutely aware of the roar of time as it relentlessly rushes past me with no thought for my feelings.

And here we are—those “future days” are closing in and the roar of time is getting louder and louder.

From the time you were born until now, you have taken a different path, and not an easy one at that! It has been my joy to have a front row seat to all of it. I’m proud of you, Grayson. School hasn’t been, let’s say, your favorite pastime. But you made it through.

So, what happens from here? I don’t know how you are going to answer that question or whether you are even ready to tackle that question. But, I do know this: You have shown me that when you put your mind to it you can do anything and be the best at it! Just know that I am still here! Still on your team! Still willing to do anything for you as you figure things out.

Remember, Grayson, if you love someone, you have to work at staying close to them.

And one more thing, Grayson: Please continue to be Jesus’s boy! Nothing matters more than that.

With All of My Love,

Dad
