My 5000th Uber Ride!

Yesterday, I gave my 5000th Uber ride! Ubering has been an unlikely job for me. But, honestly, there have been a lot of days when just being able to be with people for a while was just what I needed. And it hasn’t been boring!

Mostly, it has just been about getting people where they need to go. But believe me when I tell you there have been some beautiful divine appointments!

Divine Appointments and a Chance to Encourage

There were several times when people were in tears once it dawned on them that God loved them enough to orchestrate an Uber ride with someone who would encourage them and pray for them at just the right time and often at times and in places that I don’t Uber.

A woman whose daughter was about to die . . .

a veteran who was severely betrayed by his spouse . . .

a young man who used to be involved in ministry but now was dealing with sickness in his family and at his wits end financially . . .

a woman who was reminded of the call of God on her life . . .

three young women enjoying the Dallas nightlife on a Saturday night who realized they needed to be back in church and wanted prayer . . .

Tears and prayers and the realization that God had not forgotten them.

I have also met people—usually young adults even teenagers—who are doing exceptional things with their lives. It has been my intention never to let one of those people exit my car without telling them what a magnificent job they are doing, and as far as I know not one of them has.

Unexpected Riders

In the last year and eight months, I have picked up Canadian acrobats in town to give a workshop, and F 35 fighter pilot heading to Lisbon to pick up a previously disabled F 35 and fly it where it needed to go, a retired Navy man who spent his career on submarines and who actually had the experience of being sealed in a compartment until he could fix a leak! I picked up a best-selling author who was in Texas for a book signing, a man from Warner Brothers in town doing a screening for Taylor Sheridan, and a woman whose brother-in-law is one of the Pharisees on the Chosen! I’m pretty sure I unwittingly helped complete a few drug deals. I picked up a young lady who was on her way to take a drug test for her new job but not before we stopped so that she could pick up a package of UPASS Fetish Urine that she intended to use on that drug test (that’s the day I learned you could buy fake pee)!

Animals Too!

And there have been animals. Dogs, cats, even a baby mouse in a woman’s pocket. She had found some newborn baby mice living in her end table drawer. One had been abandoned, and she was trying to keep it alive! One little dog wanted to be under my arm so badly that he was willing for his back end to dangle between the front console and the backseat just to do it!

Not All Fun and Games

There have been people from so many different countries and so many different backgrounds with so many different careers . . . but for the most part, it’s just been people. And, after 5,000 rides (probably 6000 to 7000 people since a lot of rides have more than one person), except for about 20 of them, they’ve all just been good people doing their thing. As far the 20? Let’s just say it’s not all fighter pilots, puppy dogs, and Hollywood types! Sometimes it’s ending the ride early and dropping a woman off at the McDonald’s for sharing too many of the gory details of her love life. You gotta draw the line somewhere.

  1. Congratulations, Pastor Scott! Thank you for sharing. Fortunately the LORD has used you mightily with your passengers and there were not too many wild rides! Love in Jesus, Sharon and Nelson
